Volunteer Application

Before applying make sure that you have read An Overview of Volunteering and ABC Course Expectations.

Step 1 - Complete a Cruse Birmingham Application form and send it to Adam Page at either of the following...

Post: Cruse Bereavement Care, 205 Corporation Street, King Edward Building, Birmingham, B4 6SE

Email: adam.page@crusebirmingham.co.uk

Restrictions:  We do not accept applicants who have experienced a significant bereavement in the last 2 years or require a counselling placement. Volunteers who want to train with Birmingham so that they can volunteer for another area should apply as normal, but priority is always given to trainees who wish to volunteer for the Birmingham Area.

Step 2 - Suitable candidates will be interviewed in the 3 months prior to a course starting. Successful candidates will be required to pay a non-refundable £100 deposit to hold their place on the ABC course (Awareness in Bereavement Care). This is the standard nationally accredited course that all new volunteers have to complete. The balance is payable before the course starts.

Step 3 - Successful candidates will be required to attend the ABC training course, the dates of which are on the latest application form.

There are no exams on the course but trainees are required to complete a learning portfolio. Trainees should allow for a few hours per week to complete on-going portfolio work. Trainees also need to attend a minimum of 13 out of 16 sessions (there are 2 sessions a day), attendance on the first day is compulsory.

Step 4 - Once passing the course you will be invited to an interview, which the course trainers will not take part in.

Step 5 - Once accepted, you can agree a suitable time for you to commence volunteering and begin your induction and probationary period as a Bereavement Support Worker. Initially you will start on the telephone and when you are ready you will start working face to face with clients. In time you may become involved with one of our many other services, such as email support or group work.

Step 6 - You will receive monthly supervision, ongoing training, travel expenses and as many biscuits as you can eat, all for free!

Course Costings

The total cost for the course is £249.00 - the full amount/balance is payable 14 days prior to the course starting, if this is difficult to achieve then we may agree to the course fee being paid for in 3 instalments. We do offer concessionary places at £100, which applies if you are in receipt of benefits or in full time education.

If you wish to apply for a concessionary place or to would like to pay by instalments you must send an email/letter to us explaining and evidencing your circumstances. Note that all cases will be considered on an individual basis and a decision cannot be confirmed until after an interview is completed.
